How Roman Numerals Work

Roman numerals follow two simple rules: additive and subtractive notation.

VIII = 8
Additive: symbols left to right add up. V (5) + I + I + I = 8.
IV = 4
Subtractive: a smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted. I before V = 5 − 1 = 4.
XL = 40
X before L means 50 − 10 = 40. Subtractive pairs: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM.
MMM = 3000
Standard Roman numerals go up to 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Beyond that, a bar over a symbol means ×1000.
